Surround Project is a San Antonio–based theatre company creating connective experiences around contemporary American plays—stories that speak directly to the world we’re living in right now.
We believe theatre can be more than watching a story unfold in the dark. It can be something we experience together. Something that sparks conversation, builds connection, and leaves us with new understanding—of the play, of each other, and of ourselves.
The San Antonio theatre community continues to grow and evolve. After we took a pandemic-pause, we noticed a gap: audiences who want to see timely, award-winning American plays written in the last 10–15 years often have to leave town to find them. These are the stories grappling with urgent questions about how we live together now.
We created Surround Project to bring those stories here to San Antonio—and to build a bridge between audience and artist.
We produce new-to-San-Antonio plays by notable, contemporary American playwrights, intentionally selecting work that feels urgent, resonant, and necessary. Our productions are designed to be sustainable, often featuring smaller casts that allow for intimacy and focus. But the play itself is only part of the experience.
What makes Surround Project unique is that we don’t plan a season. We are project-based. We pick a timely story, and surround it with immersive context. Audiences encounter interactive visual art, conversation games, facilitated discussions, salons, and opportunities to engage with artists, subject-matter experts, nonprofits, and service organizations connected to the play’s themes.
These elements invite audiences to go deeper—to reflect, ask questions, and connect.
When you attend a Surround Project event, you don’t just watch a play.
You gain context.
You meet fellow audience members and get to know the artists.
You take part in a shared exploration of the story and its relevance to our lives.
Guided by values of compassion, resilience, relationships, and risk, Surround Project creates theatre that asks something of its artists and audience.
Theatre that surprises.
Theatre that stays with you. This is Surround Project.
Let’s Play!
