San Antonio, Texas – On January 29, 2018, The Surround Project partnered with the Barshop JCC and their Special Needs & Inclusion Department to host a free seminar for cultural arts administrators in San Antonio. The first of a series in cultural accessibility, this seminar focused on utilizing ASL Interpretation at events.
Both professionals and lay leaders joined the conversation from agencies like The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, the Witte Museum, Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, San Antonio Museum of Art, Morgan’s Wonderland, Jump-Start Performance Co., San Antonio College, and Alamo City Interpreters.
The conversation included a tool-kit for administrators on preparing for an ASL Interpreted event, a demonstration of a dual-interpreted musical number, and a Q&A session with the panel.
Participants were surveyed about their further interests in learning about cultural arts accessibility, and future seminars are being planned to address needs relating to audiences & artists who are blind or have low vision and audiences with sensory needs.
